RTI & Student Conduct: Research-Based Interventions to Manage Challenging Behaviors in the Classroom
Workshop Description
There are many reasons that students misbehave in school settings. They may act out due to frustration with poor academic performance, become defiant because they lack the motivation to complete schoolwork, or become confused and upset because they do not have the skills necessary to organize and complete complex assignments.
The workshop is designed to give teachers, support staff, and school administrators strategies that they can use immediately to manage challenging student behavior. The training explores methods to identify possible causes of problem behaviors. Additionally, it provides an overview of research-based interventions found to be effective behavior-management tools, such as behavior contracts, student self-monitoring, teacher communication strategies that defuse power struggles and build cooperation, and techniques to calm and refocus students who are highly agitated. Participants also review ideas to increase student motivation for learning. This workshop adopts the Response-to-Intervention (RTI) model as a framework for understanding why particular students misbehave and for creating effective intervention plans to turn that behavior in a positive direction.
Workshop Outcomes
As a result of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- recognize common ‘drivers’ or triggers to student misbehavior in school settings.
- select appropriate behavioral and motivational interventions for various types of student misbehavior.
- understand methods for systematically monitoring and charting group and individual student behaviors.
- access free Internet resources to assist in the development and monitoring of student behavior intervention plans.
