RTI: Using Data to Understand and Fix Student Academic and Behavioral Problems

Workshop Description
Schools need convenient and practical tools to measure the academic and behavioral progress of struggling students. This workshop provides teachers, support staff, and administrators with training in formative assessments that can be used in busy classrooms.  In the first part of the workshop, participants learn about curriculum-based measurement (CBM), a series of brief academic assessments that schools can use to identify students with academic delays. Several common methods for CBM in literacy, math, and writing are presented, along with guidelines for organizing a school-wide academic screening program. The second workshop segment focuses on ‘instructional’ assessment—the more detailed assessment that schools complete with specific struggling students to map out those students’ unique profile of academic skills and deficits. Participants learn about a simple framework (‘RIOT/ICEL’) that can ensure that schools efficiently collect data from multiple sources and investigate an appropriate range of questions to uncover the primary reason(s) for delayed academic performance. The final workshop section addresses common and useful methods of behavioral data collection, including behavior logs, Daily Behavior Reports, and other classroom-friendly tools. Free on-line resources for data collection are also shared.

Workshop Outcomes
As a result of attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • identify types of curriculum-based measures commonly used in schools to assess student learning and know where to find these CBM materials on the Internet.
  • develop an RTI school-wide academic screening plan using existing resources.
  • use the RIOT/ICEL framework to organize student data and to uncover the reason(s) for poor student academic performance
  • select assessment tools to measure student behaviors and to judge their impact on student learning.
  • access free resources on the Internet for academic and behavioral assessment.
