RTI: Academic Interventions for Difficult-to-Teach Students
 
Workshop Description:
Students who struggle academically often require individualized interventions carefully tailored to their areas of academic deficit. This workshop is designed to give teachers, support staff, and administrators the necessary tools to plan and carry out effective academic interventions.
 
Participants review an essential checklist of ‘foundation’ academic instructional components, such as instructional match; clear, direct instruction; high rate of active student responding; and timely performance feedback. The training reviews three key academic domains: reading, mathematics, and writing. For each academic domain, participants learn about common 'stumbling blocks' that can prevent students from achieving success and review a sampling of effective, classroom-friendly, research-based intervention scripts. At the close of the training, a series of free Internet resources are reviewed that schools can use for intervention planning and assessment.
 
Workshop Outcomes
As a result of attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

 
  • know the ‘foundation’ academic components that should be routinely incorporated into instruction for struggling learners
  • understand useful analytic tools--such as the Instructional Hierarchy and the Schoolwork Motivation Assessment—that can be used in the classroom to select and structure effective academic interventions.
  • be aware of specific intervention ideas for common student academic concerns.
  • access  free Internet resources that can assist teachers in selecting evidence-based academic interventions.
